Bishop Robert Barron said he has urged Catholics on the left to stop the "demonization" of the Trump administration on immigration and border security. " Barron said the Catholic left often calls for dialogue until the topic turns to conservatives. He recommended building "bridges of conversation" instead of issuing directives.
Barron said he was moved by comments from border czar Tom Homan during a White House call tied to President Donald Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission. Homan, who Barron noted is Catholic, described the human trafficking of children and cases of children who have disappeared.
Barron said Homan argued that an open border produces "enormous moral problems" beyond the view that it is simply humanitarian.
Barron said he has encouraged dialogue between the Vatican and the Trump administration despite tensions involving Pope Leo XIV. He proposed that leading Catholics in the administration, including JD Vance, Marco Rubio, and Brian Burch, meet with Vatican counterparts to discuss policy within the church’s moral framework.
