Black Forest Labs Raises Funds at $3.25 Billion Valuation and Expands into Physical AI Applications

Black Forest Labs, a startup based in Freiburg, Germany, with approximately 70 employees, has developed AI image generation technology. 25 billion valuation following agreements to provide AI image-generation features for Adobe and Canva. It also signed deals with Microsoft, Meta, and xAI to integrate its technology into their products.
In 2024, xAI selected Black Forest Labs to power the image generator for its Grok chatbot. That partnership concluded months later when xAI developed an internal AI image model. Sources familiar with the matter reported to Wired that xAI recently approached Black Forest Labs to license its technology again, but the startup declined, citing operational difficulties related to xAI's work environment.
xAI did not respond to Wired's request for comment. In September, Black Forest Labs entered a $140 million multiyear agreement granting Meta access to its AI image-generation technology. According to benchmarks from Artificial Analysis, Black Forest Labs' image generators rank below those of OpenAI and Google.
Forest Labs' models are among the most downloaded text-to-image options on Hugging Face, suggesting widespread use in market AI image tools via free versions.
The company employs latent diffusion research, where AI models create a rough image outline before adding details. This approach requires fewer resources than some competitors' methods. Black Forest Labs plans to introduce a robot powered by its AI models later this year, though the hardware partner was not specified. The initiative aligns with the company's focus on AI for perceiving and acting in the physical world.
