Blood Bikers Charity Completes 30,000th NHS Delivery
The Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes charity has completed its 30,000th delivery of blood samples and medical supplies to NHS hospitals. The milestone was reached after ten years of 24-hour volunteer operations across the West Midlands.
Volunteer drivers for the Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes charity have completed their 30,000th delivery of blood samples and medical supplies to NHS hospitals and communities in the West Midlands. The charity has operated for ten years, providing free transport services around the clock.
Driver Jack Hickie completed the landmark delivery and thanked donors for their support over the past decade.
A spokesman for the group said every completed job helps the NHS deliver care to local communities. The charity is on track to complete 5,000 jobs this year and aims to reach 40,000 deliveries in total. In recent weeks the group has made deliveries as far north as Liverpool and transported medication from Warwick Hospital across the SWFT network.
The team completed 65 jobs free for the NHS during that period.
NHS officials have previously warned that the health service needs one million regular blood donors to maintain supply. Officials described 2024 as challenging for blood stocks, noting that just two per cent of the population sustains the nation's supply.
NHS Blood and Transplant said just under 800,000 people supported England's blood supply over the past 12 months. The agency stated that more donors are needed to avoid a red alert, which would indicate a threat to public safety. NHS officials said there is a critical need for more donors with O negative blood for emergency treatment.
There is also a need for more black donors, who are more likely to have blood types that help treat people with sickle cell disease. NHS Blood and Transplant chief executive Dr Jo Farrar said thousands of regular donors help keep patients alive and save thousands of lives each year.
