Bloomwell, a German telehealth company founded in 2020, connects patients with doctors for medical cannabis prescriptions that can be delivered to their homes. The company has grown to serve more than 100,000 patients through a network of 60 doctors. Germany’s legal cannabis market reached $944 million in sales last year, according to Forbes.
themarketherald.com.auBloomwell began operations in September 2020 in a two-room doctor’s practice in Frankfurt, Germany. At the time cannabis was still classified as a narcotic, requiring paper prescriptions, secure storage at pharmacies and physical delivery by couriers.

The company’s first patient received cannabis within a week. The process has since been simplified. Patients use an app to submit medical history, complete a questionnaire and receive a prescription either immediately or after a video or in-person consultation at one of the company’s four locations.
Prescriptions are filled by pharmacies and products can be picked up or delivered within 24 to 48 hours via DHL.
Forbes estimates Bloomwell generates $55 million in annual revenue with a 30 percent margin. The company became profitable in 2024 and increased its number of prescriptions by 3,300 percent from 2024 to 2025. It expects to distribute between 25 and 30 tons of cannabis in 2026.
Bloomwell holds an estimated 15 to 20 percent share of the German market and continues to expand. Germany recorded $944 million in legal cannabis sales last year, up from $500 million in 2024, making it the largest such market in Europe. The company operates three main revenue streams.
It sells software and data tools to doctors for patient management, electronic prescriptions and treatment insights. It also sells software to pharmacists for inventory and order management. In addition it cross-sells vape devices, paraphernalia and travel documentation to patients.
Its wholesale arm, Ilios Santé, accounts for about 10 percent of revenue.
Bloomwell developed certified digital prescription software in cooperation with the German government. Cofounder Julian Wichmann said the shift from paper and overnight couriers to fully digital processes has allowed faster service. “We are a data powerhouse,” Wichmann stated.
Niklas Kouparanis, Bloomwell’s CEO, co-founded the company with Julian Wichmann, Samuel Menghistu and his sister Anna-Sophia Kouparanis. The siblings previously worked in cannabis wholesale. Niklas Kouparanis sold an earlier company, Farmako, to a Canadian firm for $15 million.
The company’s model resembles U.S. telehealth platforms. Patients choose cannabis products, see prices, pay and arrange delivery through the app. Kouparanis compared the experience to ordering on Amazon. Curaleaf acquired Emmac Life Sciences in 2021 for $286 million.
In February, Organigram acquired Berlin-based Sanity Group for $287 million.
