A boat capsized near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and three others missing. The vessel, a 50-foot multilevel cabin cruiser, was involved in a memorial service when it was hit by a wave or took on water and capsized, San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said. The emergency call came in just after 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday when the boat was about 600 yards from the island, Lt. Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department said. The vessel was believed to have launched near the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.
Sixteen people were rescued from the water and taken to Gashouse Cove Marina, ABC News reported. A dog on board also died. The vessel's motor was still running and leaking fuel when rescuers arrived, Crispen said.
A captain of another boat who assisted described the waves as choppy. Search efforts involving divers, helicopters and vessels continued into Wednesday. By Tuesday evening authorities had expanded operations into the open ocean on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The average temperature of the bay in July is around 59 degrees Fahrenheit.
