Nbc NewsBobby Cox died on May 9, 2026, at the age of 84 in Marietta, Georgia. The Atlanta Braves announced his death on Saturday. He had suffered a stroke in 2019, with heart issues that complicated his recovery.
Cox managed the Atlanta Braves for 25 years after taking over a last-place team in June 1990. He took over a last-place team in 1990 and led the Braves to the 1991 World Series. The club then won 14 consecutive division titles from 1991-2005, a streak unmatched in major professional sports, though it resulted in only one World Series title.
During his tenure the Braves won five National League pennants and captured the 1995 World Series title, the franchise's only championship. Cox retired after the 2010 season. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
The Braves retired his No. 6 jersey in 2011. Cox also managed the Toronto Blue Jays for four seasons, bringing the franchise its first winning record in 1983 and its first division title in 1985. In all he managed in the major leagues for 29 seasons.
Cox ranks fourth all-time with 2,504 regular-season wins, trailing only Connie Mack, John McGraw and Tony La Russa. He stands fifth with 4,508 games managed. He holds the record with 15 division titles, including the 14 consecutive, and recorded 16 playoff appearances with 67 playoff victories.
His 158 regular-season ejections remain the most by any manager. The Braves described his impact in a statement. "Bobby was the best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform. He led our team to 14 straight division titles, five National League pennants, and the unforgettable World Series title in 1995.
“Bobby was a favorite among all in the baseball community, especially those who played for him. His wealth of knowledge on player development and the intricacies of managing the game were rewarded with the sport’s ultimate prize in 2014 - enshrinement into the Baseball Hall of Fame.”
“— Atlanta Braves statement Cox brought an old-school style to the dugout, always wearing spikes and stirrups. Players praised his fatherly demeanor and deep knowledge of the game. Catcher Brian McCann once called him "the Atlanta Braves" and "one of the best human beings any of us have ever met." Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp called Cox a "true legend" whose vision and management style built a legacy that will endure for generations. The death came days after that of media tycoon Ted Turner, who owned the Braves during much of Cox's tenure and helped revitalize the franchise and the city.”
