The body of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol arrived at the Grand Palace in Bangkok around 5:00 pm local time on Saturday. Thousands of mourners dressed in black lined the 10-kilometre route from Chulalongkorn Hospital, where the princess had been treated.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha, known as Princess Bha, died on Thursday at age 47 after an abdominal infection. She had been in a coma for more than three years due to a cardiac condition.
Mourners and protocol Mourners performed Buddhist rituals by pouring holy water before a portrait of the princess. Police closed roads in central Bangkok and traffic halted as the motorcade passed. The Thai government directed state officials to wear black and ordered flags flown at half-mast for 15 days. The funeral date has not yet been announced.
Second royal death This marks the second death in the royal family in recent months, following the passing of Queen Sirikit in October at age 93. Princess Bajrakitiyabha was the only child from the king's first marriage and had served as a prosecutor, diplomat, and ambassador to Austria.
