Bonnie Tyler Suffered Cardiac Arrest During Induced Coma After Appendix Surgery

The 74-year-old performer remains in intensive care at a hospital in the Algarve region of Portugal. Tyler underwent emergency surgery after her appendix ruptured. She was placed in the induced coma to aid her recovery following the procedure. She is also being treated for an infection with high doses of antibiotics.

A longtime associate told a Portuguese outlet that doctors are positive regarding her recovery. Tyler had felt unwell during a performance in London but initial medical checks found no symptoms. She then traveled to her home in the Algarve, where she developed severe abdominal pain and was admitted to a hospital in Faro.

Tyler was rushed to the hospital on April 30.

The surgery took place after her appendix had ruptured. She was later placed in the induced coma before the cardiac arrest occurred during efforts to revive her. The singer first became ill during a show in London. After traveling to Portugal she experienced increasing pain that led to the April 30 hospital admission. She has owned a home in the Algarve for more than 30 years.

Tyler released her debut single 50 years ago.

She gained widespread recognition with the 1983 album "Faster Than the Speed of Night," whose lead track "Total Eclipse of the Heart" has been streamed more than one billion times on Spotify. She is scheduled to begin her Jubilee tour on May 22 in Malta, although that date no longer appears on the tour section of her website.

The tour is set to include performances in Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Turkey, Austria, Scotland and England over the summer. Tyler has been performing professionally since age 17 in 1969. She told an interviewer last month that she remains fit enough to continue shows and has no plans to retire.
