Customs and Border Protection stated on July 7 that construction is slated to begin this month. A CBP spokesperson said a Smart Wall with 30-foot-high barriers, advanced detection technology, cameras and new roads is planned for the Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Marfa and Van Horn Station areas. Border wall panel installation is anticipated to begin in July in the Marfa and Van Horn areas.
In other parts of the Big Bend Sector, CBP said it will use advanced technology and natural terrain barriers along with cameras, sensors, roads and limited vehicle barriers. The national park runs along approximately 120 miles of the international border, and a nearby state park runs along 24 miles.
CBP stated it is not planning to construct a 30-foot-high barrier inside Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park or the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area.
The agency said it is coordinating with park officials where minimal barrier may be adjacent to parks and will use and improve existing public and park roads, including all-weather roads in some areas and paved roads where needed for drainage and erosion control.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott stated in late April 2026 that the agency would not build a border wall inside Big Bend National Park. The latest government renderings of border wall plans were posted on CBP’s website on July 1.
CBP has conducted outreach with the public, local officials, state agencies and law enforcement. The public comment period for the vehicle barrier system project in Brewster County remains open until July 13, 2026.
