Border wall construction pace remains below target for 2027 completion

DHS has completed 10 percent of its planned primary border wall, leaving roughly 698 miles still to build, according to Customs and Border Protection data. The agency would need to increase its pace to more than 13 miles per week to finish construction by the end of 2027. The average weekly rate for most of 2026 has been about 2.6 miles.

Construction challenges Officials must still resolve construction lawsuits, negotiate land access with private owners, and finalize remaining contracts and designs. Two eminent domain cases have already been filed to obtain property from unwilling landowners.

CBP has waived some environmental reviews and removed hundreds of miles of planned wall from difficult terrain near Big Bend state and national parks after local opposition.

Statements on timeline A CBP spokesperson said the agency continues to develop its construction plan under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, focusing on areas with historically high illegal entry. The same statement noted that most contracts have been awarded and projects are moving past the design stage, which officials expect will raise the construction rate.

Mullin testified to Congress in June that the primary wall would be completed from the Pacific to the Gulf of America by this time next year and repeated the timeline at a recent press conference.
