A malfunctioning tug kept them on the tarmac past midnight, forcing an overnight stay at two Chicago hotels. A second delay occurred Friday morning over cockpit switch or light bulb problems. Sonny Gray pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts on 91 pitches.
Masataka Yoshida hit a two-run double in the first inning. Gray said the travel experience was wild and that no one had probably experienced it before. Interim manager Chad Tracy announced Ceddanne Rafaela's addition to the AL All-Star team over the plane loudspeaker.
Players listened to music and played cards during the delays, Rafaela said. Pitcher Peyton Tolle ate about five doughnuts while most teammates had burritos. The team took off from Chicago a little before 3 p.m.
