Yardbarker.com reported that Sean McAdam of MassLive wrote on June 27 that unnamed sources within the organization questioned Mayer’s mental toughness and his willingness to play through perceived minor physical issues. The report appeared hours before the team announced the placement. Mayer recorded four barrels across 101 batted ball events since May 1.
Through April he posted a 91 wRC+ and a 9.4 percent barrel rate. Earlier this season, Julian McWilliams of CBS Sports reported that members of the organization no longer viewed shortstop Trevor Story as an everyday impact player.
