Brazil, Paraguay and Morocco advance in World Cup knockout round

Brazil scored in the sixth minute of injury time to defeat Japan 2-1 in a round-of-32 match in Houston. Japan had taken the lead in the 29th minute before Brazil equalized in the second half and won with a late goal.

Japan has not won a knockout-stage match at any World Cup.

Brazil, a five-time champion, will next face the winner of today's Ivory Coast-Norway match.

Germany eliminated by Paraguay Paraguay defeated Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time. Germany had won its previous four World Cup penalty shootouts. Paraguayan President Santiago Peña declared a national holiday to mark the result. Paraguay will face the winner of today's France-Sweden match.

Morocco defeats Netherlands on penalties Morocco advanced past the Netherlands after a 1-1 draw and a penalty shootout. Morocco will play Canada in the round of 16 in Houston on Saturday.

Today's remaining matches France plays Sweden at 5 p.m.

ET, Ivory Coast faces Norway at 1 p.m. ET, and Mexico hosts Ecuador at 9 p.m. ET. All three games are scheduled for today.
