Brewers' Abner Uribe Suspended One Game After Gestures Toward Cardinals Dugout

Major League Baseball suspended Milwaukee Brewers reliever Abner Uribe for one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for making three WWE-style crotch chops toward the St. Louis Cardinals dugout after a called third strike on Tuesday night. The suspension was announced Friday, May 29, 2026.

Uribe is appealing, so he remained eligible to pitch and earned the win in a 5-4, 10-inning victory over the Houston Astros that same night. The incident occurred during the eighth inning of a 6-0 Brewers win over the Cardinals. Uribe retired Alec Burleson on a called third strike with two outs and runners on first and second.

The Cardinals challenged the call, which was confirmed at the bottom of the strike zone. Uribe, 25, then turned toward the Cardinals dugout and made the three gestures. He pitched only that inning in the game.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after Tuesday's game that he was embarrassed by the antics. "We accept the fact that the MLB has a job to do and I'll be the first one to say what Abner did is unacceptable," Murphy said Friday. "I'm not going to make any other statements about what's fair and what's not fair.

I don't have a full view of everything and how it works or what all goes behind it. But Abner has the right to appeal. " Uribe said through an interpreter that he apologized to his team. "Everyone here knows me and knows who I am, and knows I have a bit of a history of being emotional out there," he said.

"I think first I owe an apology to the Brewers. I owe an apology to my teammates, to my manager, all the bosses of the team. " He did not apologize to the Cardinals. Uribe returned to the mound Friday for the first time since the incident, entering in the ninth inning with the score tied.

The Astros loaded the bases with one out, but Uribe struck out Brice Matthews and retired Isaac Paredes on a popout. "No, the mentality was the same as it is any other day," Uribe said afterward. " He was stoic on the mound.

Murphy said the team handled the matter internally and that Uribe was unavailable to pitch Wednesday. "He clearly understands," Murphy said. "He's clearly made the apologies he needs to make.
