Brewers pitcher Woodruff to undergo shoulder surgery

Milwaukee Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff will undergo another anterior capsule surgery on his right shoulder, the team announced Friday. Woodruff, 33, told reporters before Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins that the procedure is identical to the one performed after the 2023 season.

His last recovery took approximately 20 months. "I'm never closing the door on pitching," Woodruff said.

Team context In nine starts this season, Woodruff went 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 45⅓ innings. The Brewers' 3.48 ERA ranked second in the majors entering Saturday. Left-hander Kyle Harrison was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 11 with forearm tightness and has begun a throwing program while awaiting MRI results.

The Brewers acquired right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. and left-hander Colton Gordon from the Houston Astros on Wednesday in exchange for outfield prospect Jadyn Fielder. McCullers was reinstated from the injured list Friday and optioned reliever Jared Koenig to Triple-A Nashville.

"I knew, when we went to the mound [to pull Woodruff], it was bad," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. " Woodruff said the perspective gained from prior rehabilitation will help him through the upcoming process.
