Britain Announces Tighter MI5 Oversight After Tribunal Finds Agency Misled Courts and MI5 Apologizes

The British government announced on July 16, 2026, that it will impose tighter oversight on MI5 after an official report found the agency misled courts about its relationship with a neo-Nazi informant accused of attacking his partner. The Investigatory Powers Tribunal determined that MI5 repeatedly presented a false account in three separate court proceedings.

MI5 Director-General Ken McCallum said the agency recognizes without hesitation the seriousness of its failings and is working to ensure it never finds itself in this position again.

The Independent reported that in a separate case last year a report found MI5 protected a top spy planted within the Irish Republican Army when the agency knew he was wanted by police for murder and continued to suppress the truth about the agent decades after Northern Ireland’s conflict.
