Britain Boards and Detains Sanctioned Tanker Smyrtos in English Channel

British armed forces boarded and detained the tanker Smyrtos on Sunday in the English Channel. The vessel is suspected of belonging to Russia's shadow fleet and is already under international sanctions for shipping oil in violation of restrictions tied to Moscow's war on Ukraine. The boarding took place on June 14, 2026.

It is the first UK-led operation of its kind, according to the Defense Ministry. The ship will remain under monitoring off the south coast of England while authorities conduct their investigation. The operation was carried out in close coordination with French authorities.

French forces have previously intercepted multiple vessels linked to the same fleet. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the action delivers another blow to Russia. "This operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that they cannot hide," he said.

U.K. authorities stated that such operations directly reduce the resources sustaining Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Russia is believed to be using a fleet of hundreds of ships to evade sanctions imposed over its war against Ukraine.
