British artist David Hockney died at age 88 on Thursday at his home in London. Publicist Erica Bolton of Bolton & Quinn announced the death on Friday and stated that Hockney passed away peacefully. Hockney was born in 1937 in West Yorkshire.
He trained at the Bradford School of Art and graduated from London's Royal College of Art with a Gold Medal. He moved to California in 1964. In 2018 he purchased a farmhouse in Normandy, France 24 reported.
Britain awarded him the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1997. In 2026 he was named Officier in France's Legion d'Honneur, CBS News reported. London's Serpentine Gallery currently has an exhibition of new paintings conceived with the artist, CBS News reported.
CBS News reported that Hockney is survived by his long-time partner Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima, two brothers, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A lifelong smoker who retained his Yorkshire accent, Hockney continued to work daily until his death. "You don't retire doing this," he told the BBC.
