British man admits manslaughter in Canadian restaurant bill dispute; two others sentenced to time served as accessories

BBC NewsRobert Evans Jr, 25, pleaded guilty on Friday to the manslaughter of Sharif Rahman, 44, in a Canadian court. The plea followed an August 2023 altercation outside a curry house in Owen Sound over an unpaid $150 bill. Rahman, a father-of-one, was found in the street by a staff member after the confrontation.
He died a week later in hospital in London, Ontario. Robert Busby Evans, 49, and Barry Evans, 56, admitted being accessories to the manslaughter. Both men were sentenced to time already served. The three men, originally from Manchester, were in Canada on holiday visas at the time of the incident.
They left the country shortly afterward. Evans Jr and his father were arrested by Police Scotland in Edinburgh more than a year later. Barry Evans was arrested in Dalkeith. All three consented to extradition at separate hearings last October before Sheriff Julius Komorowski at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
Sheriff Komorowski told them there was "no appeal" against their decision. " Evans Jr will be sentenced next month. The two older men have been taken into the custody of the Canadian Border Agency for repatriation.
Owen Sound lies about 118 miles from Toronto. Canadian police confirmed the guilty pleas to BBC News.
