British Prime Minister Resigns After 717 Days in Office

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned on Monday after 717 days in office. The move follows poor results for his Labour Party in recent elections and follows a period of economic stagnation.

Starmer becomes the sixth prime minister to leave office since 2016. The announcement will lead to the appointment of the country's seventh leader in ten years.

Cameron served 2,255 days from 2010 to 2016 before resigning after a referendum on leaving the European Union. Theresa May held office for 1,106 days from 2016 to 2019 and stepped down after parliament rejected her withdrawal agreement three times. Boris Johnson served 1,140 days from 2019 to 2022.

He faced scrutiny over gatherings held during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and later resigned his parliamentary seat. Liz Truss served 45 days in 2022 after proposing a large package of tax cuts. Rishi Sunak served 620 days from 2022 to 2024 before resigning after the Labour Party won a general election.
