A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the royal family was not made aware of the severity until later. The King met with members of the King's Troop on Saturday.
The spokesperson stated the King will be in touch with the family to share his personal condolences.
Police described the death as unexplained but non-suspicious. Officers are working with the British Army, Ministry of Defence, Defence Accident Investigation Branch, and Royal Windsor Horse Show organizers HPower to determine how the incident occurred. The horse show continued on Saturday without another display by the King's Troop.
