Bronx Street Renamed Didarul Islam Way to Honor Slain NYPD Officer

The location at E. 172nd Street and Beach Avenue in Soundview, The Bronx, was renamed Didarul Islam Way in a Saturday ceremony attended by the slain NYPD officer's family and friends along with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and other department officials, the New York Post reported.

Tisch said in a post on X after the ceremony that placing the officer's name on the street made him part of the city's landscape. She added that a person's name in the community becomes part of the story New York tells about itself and that Islam earned that place.

Islam, who was 36, was working a security detail in uniform at 345 Park Ave. in Midtown Manhattan on July 28, 2025, when gunman Shane Devon Tamura, 27, entered the lobby with an AR-15-style rifle and opened fire. Tamura killed four people including Islam before fatally shooting himself.

Investigators determined Tamura targeted the NFL because he believed he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which an autopsy later confirmed. Islam was posthumously promoted to Detective First Grade. His wife, pregnant at the time of his death, gave birth to a son shortly afterward and attended the renaming with their three young sons.

Tisch said in her post that Didarul Islam Way should remind people of his devotion to New York and his family. An NFL employee injured in the shooting plans to sue New York City for $24 million, claiming Islam's negligence allowed the gunman to enter the building.
