Bronx Zoo Elephant Euthanized at Age 55 After Health Decline
Happy, an Asian elephant at the Bronx Zoo, was euthanized Tuesday after age-related conditions worsened. The zoo said a necropsy found arthritis and inoperable uterine tumors.
FortuneThe Bronx Zoo euthanized an Asian elephant named Happy on Tuesday after age-related conditions accelerated in recent weeks. Zoo officials said the 55-year-old showed signs of declining kidney or liver function. A necropsy later revealed arthritis and large uterine tumors that could not be diagnosed through standard exams.
Interim zoo director Craig Piper said Happy was a longtime resident who had lived at the facility since 1977. He described her as an ambassador for elephant conservation during an interview Wednesday. Staff members who had cared for her for more than 30 years absorbed the loss.
Happy was born in the wild in Asia and arrived in the United States as a one-year-old. She was paired with other elephants until her last companion died in 2006. After that, she lived separately from the zoo’s remaining elephants but could still see, smell, and touch them over a barrier.
In 2005, researchers documented that Happy recognized herself in a mirror, touching a mark visible only in her reflection. The finding placed her among a small group of species shown to demonstrate self-awareness. Zoo officials said the median life expectancy for Asian elephants in U.S. zoos is about 45 years.
Animal rights group the Nonhuman Rights Project sued the zoo in 2018, seeking to have Happy declared a legal person and moved to a sanctuary. New York’s highest court rejected the claim in a 5-2 decision. Two judges wrote dissents describing the captivity as unjust.
Zoo officials maintained that Happy received attentive care and had space for swimming and foraging. They said relocating her could cause harm. The Wildlife Conservation Society stopped acquiring elephants twenty years ago, and the zoo’s other elephant, Patty, now remains the only one on exhibit.
Happy spent her final weeks in an off-exhibit area where staff provided hydration, nutrition, and pain management. The zoo said it will consider Patty’s future placement carefully.
