Brooklyn Preschool to Open in September After Years of Delay
A Brooklyn preschool that cost the city more than $10 million will open this fall with 63 seats for 3-K and pre-K students. City Hall announced the decision after parents petitioned for the site to open.
New York PostA nine-classroom preschool at 129 Van Brunt St. in Brooklyn will open in September, City Hall said Monday. The site will offer 45 3-K seats and 18 pre-K seats. The building had been scheduled to open by mid-2023 but remained vacant until now.
8 million in rent since 2019 while the building sat empty, according to city planning documents. Parents in the Columbia Street Waterfront District had petitioned for the site to open, citing limited nearby options and high private-care costs.
Local parent Jessica Setton launched a petition in March. She said the nearest available seats required long commutes because the bus does not serve the area. City Hall stated the decision followed years of community demand and need for additional child care capacity.
S. 29 will move to a newly opened site at 274 Atlantic Ave. Both locations will operate next fall. A Department of Education spokesperson said the change is part of an ongoing evaluation of 3-K demand. The announcement is part of a citywide addition of 2,000 3-K seats across the five boroughs.
