The Cleveland Browns are finalizing a trade that will send two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams for two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick and other draft compensation still being negotiated.

Garrett, 30, is under contract through the 2030 season after signing a four-year, $160 million extension last offseason. He set the NFL's all-time single-season sack record in the most recent season and is a seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end.

He is waiving his no-trade clause to complete the deal. He recorded 12 sacks and 22 tackles for loss over the past two seasons. The Browns told the Rams that no deal would be completed without including Verse.

The Browns are expected to save $30 million in cash from the trade. For the second consecutive year they will hold two first-round picks, and they are currently scheduled to have 11 selections in the 2027 draft, including three fourth-round picks, two fifth-round picks and two seventh-round picks.

The Rams' interest in Garrett began after the Browns modified his contract in March, moving option bonuses from the 15th day of the league year to seven days before the start of the regular season.

The Browns initially told the Rams they had no interest in trading Garrett, but the Rams persisted as the only team to pursue him. Talks intensified shortly after this year's NFL draft. The Rams were weighing sizable contract extensions for their young defensive standouts Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Verse.

Acquiring Garrett allows them to avoid extending all three players. Garrett is expected to fly to Los Angeles on Tuesday night to begin acclimating to his new team. During the offseason he spent time in Korea and Japan while remaining in regular contact with the Browns about their free-agent moves and draft selections.

The Rams previously executed a comparable move in the 2021 offseason when they traded for quarterback Matthew Stafford ahead of winning the Super Bowl played in Los Angeles. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for SoFi Stadium.
