Brunswick Unveils Camera-Based AutoCaptain System for Boat Docking

Brunswick Corporation introduced an autonomous boat docking system under its Simrad brand on July 17, 2026. Forbes.com reported that the system allows recreational boats to dock, undock, and execute small maneuvers without continuous operator input. The technology relies on six stereo cameras positioned around the vessel to provide 360-degree visualization and ranging.

An NVIDIA processor handles the input through computer vision and machine learning algorithms that run locally on the boat, enabling operation without internet connectivity and in very low light conditions. Brunswick CEO Dave Foulkes explained that the system plots a path, manages obstacle avoidance, and controls the propulsion system for close-quarter maneuvering.

He noted that boats face unique control challenges including heave, pitch, roll, and yaw, along with latency between throttle or steering adjustments and vessel response.

Brunswick plans to expand AutoCaptain to open-water autopilot features similar to collision detection and blind-spot monitoring in vehicles. Foulkes stated that technology convenience does not remove the need for training and safe operation, adding that the goal is for users to feel confident and in control.

Kinsey Fabrizio, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, said physical AI systems are becoming more capable of understanding surroundings, adapting to changing conditions, and performing complex tasks.

She observed the technology emerging across robotics, autonomous mobility, smart home devices, health tech, and industrial applications.
