Romania hosted the Bucharest Nine and Nordic Allies Summit last week in Bucharest. The meeting brought together leaders from Central and Eastern Europe, Nordic countries, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The summit occurred amid ongoing Russian military pressure on Ukraine and concerns over hybrid threats, airspace violations, and critical infrastructure. Discussions focused on air and missile defense, defense investment, and coordination among allied defense industries.

The event coincided with the Black Sea Defense Aerospace 2026 exhibition, which drew hundreds of defense companies from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States. Companies from Turkey, South Korea, and Israel participated with multiple pavilions.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO would involve increased defense spending and production, with European allies taking more responsibility for conventional defense. Polish President Karol Nawrocki said there is no NATO without the United States.

The summit also addressed continued support for Ukraine and security concerns regarding Moldova.

Dan hosted the summit while facing internal political instability after the government led by Ilie Bolojan lost a parliamentary vote of confidence two weeks earlier. Dan announced plans to consult parties on forming a new pro-Western parliamentary majority.

The post-summit statement reaffirmed support for Ukraine and highlighted Moldova's security vulnerabilities linked to Russian hybrid operations.
