Chicago Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson scored 35 points in his summer league debut on July 10 in a 97-96 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The total ranked second among Las Vegas summer league debuts since the event began in 2004. Wilson had not played a competitive game since February 10.
His lone college season at North Carolina ended that month with a broken wrist. He said he cried before the game because he was emotional to return to the court. "It's been five months to the day since the last time I played," Wilson said.
Wilson made seven 3-pointers, matching the total from his 24-game college career. He also recorded three blocks, two steals and six rebounds while committing six turnovers. His 35 points trailed only the 37 Marco Belinelli scored in a 2007 debut, according to ESPN Research.
Memphis forward Cam Boozer finished with 23 points, six rebounds and four assists. Bulls coach Tiago Splitter said he was pleased with Wilson's aggressive start but noted the team was still getting to know the rookie. Wilson said the team loss left him focused on reducing turnovers and improving boxouts.
