Captain Ibrahim Traoré announced on June 26 that Burkina Faso will break off bilateral relations with France. " The decision came days after the European Parliament adopted a June 18 resolution condemning the continued crackdown on civic space and fundamental freedoms in Burkina Faso.
Christophe Gomart, a French member of the European Parliament from Les Républicains and former director of military intelligence, introduced the measure.
French embassy and consular services in Burkina Faso will no longer be available to the 2,500 French nationals living there once staff are repatriated. Burkina Faso now joins North Korea and Afghanistan as the only countries without diplomatic relations with France. Captain Traoré seized power in Ouagadougou through a coup in September 2022.
He demanded the expulsion of the French ambassador at the end of December 2022 and forced the departure of some 400 French special forces based in the country in February 2023.
