A motorcoach struck several vehicles that had slowed for a work zone on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia, early Friday, killing five people and injuring others. Four of the dead were members of a family from Greenfield, Massachusetts, who were traveling to a wedding in South Carolina.

The family carried homemade desserts for the event. The wedding is scheduled to proceed Sunday and will also serve as a memorial.

The Doncev family—Dmitri, 45, Ecaterina, 44, and their children Emily and Mark—died in the collision. A 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts, also died in a separate SUV. Additional people received hospital treatment; one remained in critical condition while most others were released.

Virginia State Police identified the bus driver as Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York. The motorcoach belonged to E&P Travel Inc. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. An investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board was scheduled to brief reporters Saturday on the ongoing investigation.

Doncev emigrated from Moldova in 2008 and settled in Greenfield. Dmitri worked as a nurse at Holyoke Medical Center; Ecaterina was a hair stylist. Relatives said the couple had been traveling separately from Dmitri’s brother Iuri when the vehicles became separated.

Carolina Bublik, a relative, said the family learned of the crash when Dmitri’s vehicle failed to arrive and calls went unanswered. “A son, a father — the whole family — everyone that has been dear to us,” Bublik said.
