Bus crash in South Africa kills 16 and injures 20

A bus carrying 78 passengers overturned in the early hours of Thursday while traveling from Cape Town in the Western Cape to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape. The vehicle swerved to avoid a delivery truck, causing the driver to lose control, according to authorities.

Initial reports listed nine deaths, but further investigation at the scene raised the total to 16. Twenty injured passengers were taken to a hospital in Worcester, about 120 kilometers from Cape Town. At least 43 others declined medical treatment.

Investigation and road conditions Road Traffic Management Corporation officials said the cause remains under review by the RTMC and South African Police Services. Authorities warned motorists to exercise caution during the winter period due to fog, smoke, black ice, and reduced visibility.

The incident marks the second fatal bus crash in South Africa this week. A separate bus carrying passengers to the Beitbridge border in Limpopo overturned on Wednesday, killing the driver.
