BYD plans to bring the Dolphin G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid supermini, to the UK later this year. The car combines an electric motor with a petrol engine and a rechargeable battery. The new model will be positioned alongside the all-electric Dolphin Surf, priced from £18,675 to £23,975, and below the Atto 2 DM-i SUV, which starts at £26,995.

BYD has not announced pricing for the Dolphin G DM-i, though a starting figure near £23,000 is expected.

Unlike the battery-only Dolphin Surf, the Dolphin G DM-i allows shorter trips on electric power while using the petrol engine for longer distances. The company states the car will exceed 621 miles of combined range on a full battery and petrol tank.

The Dolphin G DM-i measures 4,160 mm long and 1,825 mm wide, placing it in the same class as the Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris, and Vauxhall Corsa. Boot space and interior dimensions will be confirmed closer to launch.

The Dolphin G DM-i is the first vehicle BYD developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe, rather than adapting a domestic model. Full battery size, electric-only range, and performance figures have not yet been released. BYD says the car will launch in June, with first customer deliveries expected toward the end of summer or into autumn.

UK pricing, equipment, and technical details will be announced nearer that time.
