World Leaders Respond to Shooting at White House Correspondents' Dinner

Leaders from Canada, Mexico, Australia, and other nations have responded to a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, D.C. The incident took place on Saturday at the Washington Hilton, where U.S. Gunshots were heard from the hotel lobby, leading to an evacuation of the ballroom.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on social platform X that he was relieved the president, first lady, and all guests were safe. He added that political violence has no place in any democracy and his thoughts were with those affected by the event.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said it was good that President Trump and his wife were safe following the incident. She stated that violence must never be the way and sent respects. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement that he was pleased all attendees were safe and applauded the swift action of the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies.

The British ambassador to the United States, Christian Turner, who attended the dinner with embassy officials, said on X that he was grateful for the swift and professional response of the Secret Service. He added that they were thankful the president and those in attendance were unharmed, and best wishes were with the injured officer.

D.C. police chief Jeffrey Carroll said investigators believe the suspect fired a shot and was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He also said the suspect is believed to have been a guest at the hotel. Washington D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser said in a press conference on Saturday night that a sole gunman rushed at the Secret Service in the lobby of the hotel.

Bowser added there is no reason to believe anyone else was involved. The suspect is in custody and being evaluated at a local hospital. The Associated Press reported, citing two law enforcement officials, that the suspect is identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.
