Cairo Monorail Line Opens Linking City to New Administrative Capital
A 22-station automated monorail began service in late March, connecting Cairo's eastern districts to the new administrative capital 57 kilometers away. Sixteen stations opened on May 6, with the rest scheduled for summer. A second 43-kilometer segment is planned for next year.
Le MondeCairo's monorail, an automated rail line built 10 meters above ground, began carrying passengers at the end of March. Sixteen of the 22 stations opened on May 6. The remaining stations are scheduled to open by summer. The trains, manufactured by Alstom, travel above traffic that stretches across a metropolitan area of 25 million people.
A second 43-kilometer segment called West of the Nile will connect Giza to the 6-October satellite city. That line is scheduled to open next year. Passengers on the new trains have reported smooth rides interrupted by bumps at higher speeds. The line was developed by Alstom and two Egyptian companies.
