Calgary Flames Acquire Defenceman Simon Nemec from New Jersey Devils in Multi-Pick Trade
The Calgary Flames signed 22-year-old defenceman Simon Nemec to a five-year, $36.25-million contract. Nemec was acquired from the New Jersey Devils in a June 23 trade that also brought right-winger Maxim Tsyplakov to Calgary.

The Calgary Flames signed defenceman Simon Nemec to a five-year, $36.25-million contract on Monday. The Flames acquired the 22-year-old restricted free agent from the New Jersey Devils on June 23. The trade also brought right-winger Maxim Tsyplakov to Calgary.
In return, Calgary sent conditional first-round draft picks in 2027 and 2028, a second-round pick in 2026 and prospect Etienne Morin. Nemec was selected second overall by the Devils in the 2022 NHL draft and is the highest-drafted defenceman from Slovakia in league history.
The six-foot-one, 200-pound player recorded 11 goals and 15 assists with 26 penalty minutes for New Jersey in the 2025-26 season.
He has compiled 16 goals and 33 assists in 155 career NHL games. Nemec posted two assists in six games at the February 2026 Olympics, where Slovakia finished fourth. He helped Slovakia win bronze at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
He played for the Devils in a game on April 14, 2026, in Boston.
