California recorded 41 provisional cyclosporiasis cases from January through June 2026, according to data released by the California Department of Public Health. The figure is lower than the 80 cases reported during the same period in 2025 and below the state's 2015-2025 annual average of 106 cases.
The Independent reported that Southern California is not experiencing an increase in cases and has no known local outbreaks.
CDPH Director Dr. Erica Pan stated that current numbers fall within expected ranges and that the state is not among those seeing elevated activity. A majority of cases in California are acquired internationally and linked to recent travel, the department said.
Person-to-person transmission is considered unlikely because the Cyclospora parasite requires one to two weeks outside the body to become infectious. Dr. Pan said officials are monitoring for any signs of locally acquired infection, particularly among travelers returning from states reporting higher numbers.
The department continues to advise residents to wash produce thoroughly and practice safe food handling.
