Several California beach communities have replaced or are replacing traditional fireworks displays with drone shows. The shift follows decisions by the California Coastal Commission and litigation from environmental groups.
Los Angeles TimesJohn Morris organized the annual Big Bang on the Bay fireworks display at Alamitos Beach for 14 years. Last year the commission approved only a drone version for the event, and an appeal this year was denied, leading Morris to cancel the show.
Commission policy and local responses The commission has directed permit applicants toward drone shows on a case-by-case basis, citing its mandate to protect coastal waters, marine life and the environment. Jeff Palm, an analyst with the commission, said the board has given direction to see a transition to drones.
The city of Long Beach received a one-year permit for a fireworks display outside the port after the Alamitos Beach event ended. The Queen Mary display inside the port operates without commission jurisdiction.
Legal actions and organizer reactions The Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation settled a lawsuit last month against SeaWorld San Diego over fireworks launched over water. Under the settlement the park will move to drone shows over time. Stephen Vitale, chief executive of Pyrotecnico, said the company operated 80 drone shows nationwide last year and expects to double that number this year.
He noted that drone shows remain more expensive than comparable fireworks displays. Laguna Beach and Redondo Beach returned to fireworks in 2025 after using drones in 2024. Goleta kept its drone format after switching last year. Congressman Ken Calvert introduced legislation in April to waive state and federal fireworks limits for the nation's 250th anniversary.
The bill remains in committee.
