Stinson told KGO that her students began the project after learning the habitat faced development pressure. The fourth and fifth graders have written letters to community members, celebrities, and lawmakers, posted flyers, picked up leaves, washed cars, held bake sales, and set up lemonade stands.
Teacher Nancy McCaul said the letter-writing campaign has been a positive experience. "Seeing this kind of passion in my students has honestly been a teacher's dream," McCaul stated in an emailed statement to ABC News.
The San Bernardino Mountain Land Trust is seeking $10 million to purchase the land by July 31. 3 million still needed. If the deadline is not met, the nonprofit stated it will pursue financing options that would require quarterly payments and continued fundraising. The organization described the shoreline as the last undisturbed section on the lake.
