California Governor Advises Drivers to Avoid Chevron Stations Over Memorial Day Weekend

The California governor's press office posted guidance advising drivers to avoid Chevron-branded gas stations during the Memorial Day weekend. The post stated that unbranded gasoline meets the same state standards as branded fuel but costs less at the pump.

The post included a map showing two gas stations in Sacramento County and Solano County. It noted that unbranded gas comes from the same refineries, storage tanks, and pipelines as branded products.

A Chevron spokesperson said the post was an unfortunate attack on two small businesses in the state. The spokesperson added that most Chevron stations are independently owned and operated by small business owners. Branded gasoline in California from companies such as Chevron, 76, and Valero costs roughly $0.30 more per gallon than unbranded fuel, according to a 2024 report.

The company has placed signs at pumps stating that Sacramento policies contribute to higher prices.

The average price of gas in the United States was $4.564 per gallon as of Thursday, according to AAA. In California, the average price reached $6.143 per gallon on the same day. Drivers in the state pay a California premium that includes higher state excise and sales taxes plus fees for climate programs.

The price of a gallon of gas is up $1.38 nationwide compared to the same time last year, per AAA.
