California Governor Issues Executive Order on AI and Workforce
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced an executive order directing state agencies to study artificial intelligence effects on employment. The order also creates tools to connect residents with assistance programs and training.
Washington ExaminerGov. Gavin Newsom announced an executive order Thursday directing state agencies to study and track artificial intelligence effects on the workforce. The order requires creation of a statewide dashboard to monitor industry disruption and a report identifying economic warning signs tied to automation.
It also directs development of a centralized online platform to help Californians access government assistance programs and social services.
Volunteers will support workers facing long-term unemployment and provide training for entry-level employees adapting to AI-driven changes, according to the announcement. Newsom said the order continues earlier state efforts on AI policy that began with a 2023 executive order on generative AI risks.
California is home to 33 of the world’s top 50 private AI companies. The announcement follows a Meta workforce reduction reported Wednesday that affected roughly 8,000 employees. At the federal level, the White House has taken a limited regulatory approach toward AI while the United States competes with China in technological development.
The order also addresses concerns about data center expansion and resource consumption.
