California governor primary remains deadlocked as vote counting continues

With nearly 60 percent of ballots counted, Hilton led the field while Becerra trailed him and Tom Steyer placed third.
The two candidates receiving the most votes will advance to the November general election regardless of party.
Mail ballots still outstanding California mails ballots to all registered voters about a month before election day. Many Democrats waited until the final days to return their ballots, a pattern that left early returns favoring Republicans. Election officials said additional Democratic ballots are expected to be counted in the coming days, which could shift the current order.
Other contests across states In New Jersey, Democrats nominated former healthcare executive Rebecca Bennett to challenge Republican congressman Tom Kean Jr. in a suburban district. In Iowa, state auditor Josh Turek won the Democratic nomination for an open U.S. Senate seat after defeating state senator Zach Wahls.
Turek will face former broadcaster Ashley Hinson in November. In Los Angeles, Democratic mayor Karen Bass secured one of two spots to advance to the November mayoral runoff.
