California state Sen. Scott Wiener received more than $127,600 in campaign contributions in the four days after a June 26 confrontation at San Francisco's Trans March, according to federal campaign finance records filed Wednesday. The records show the donations came from roughly 1,090 individual contributors.
The San Francisco Standard reported that the fundraising period followed the spread of video footage of the incident.
Background on the incident Video showed Wiener being confronted by a protester who initially referenced his record on transgender issues before criticizing his stance on the war in Gaza. Additional demonstrators surrounded him as one person held a middle finger near his face while he walked away.
The footage spread on social media and received coverage in national and international outlets. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was asked about the confrontation during a Fox News interview.
" Campaign analysis showed 33.5 percent of the donations came from San Francisco residents, 50.9 percent from elsewhere in California, and 15.6 percent from out-of-state donors. The campaign sent fundraising text messages after the footage spread. Wiener is running in California's 11th Congressional District to replace former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
His opponent, San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, raised just over $400,000 in the first six months of her campaign and has about $362,000 cash on hand. Wiener's campaign account holds approximately $1.2 million.
