Cambodia’s former leader Hun Sen announced on Monday that he had pardoned opposition politician Kem Sokha, ending the 72-year-old’s house arrest. Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed the decision later the same day. Kem Sokha’s lawyer, Pheng Heng, verified the release but stated that his client remains barred from politics and cannot leave the country.

The pardon came one month after an appeals court upheld Kem Sokha’s 27-year treason sentence.
