Canada Confirms Gordie Howe Bridge Opening by End of Week
Canadian officials announced the six-lane bridge linking Detroit and Windsor will open for traffic by June 15. The announcement follows earlier threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to block the crossing unless Canada provided concessions.
Al JazeeraCanadian officials confirmed the Gordie Howe International Bridge will open by the end of the week, with traffic scheduled to begin crossing the Detroit River on June 15. The six-lane structure connects Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario. It will be jointly owned by Canada and Michigan.
Background on the Project Construction on the bridge began in 2018 and lasted nearly eight years. The total cost reached roughly $6.4 billion. The crossing is named for a Canadian hockey player who played professionally in Detroit. Officials have described it as a measure to ease supply chains and reduce congestion at existing crossings.
He stated the U.S. should receive at least half of the asset. The remarks followed criticism from the family that owns the nearby Ambassador Bridge, who have sued to stop the new crossing and ran advertising against it during Trump’s first term.
““It’s positive news. The pact is set for review by July 1 and expires in 2036 if not renewed. Trade between the U.S. and Canada exceeded $909 billion in 2024, according to U.S. government figures. Canada remained the top destination for U.S. exports that year.”
