Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met in Vancouver on July 2 and pledged to conclude a free trade agreement this year while expanding cooperation on energy, defense, labor and migration. The leaders also agreed to deepen maritime security ties in the Indo-Pacific.
Carney said Filipino-Canadians are “at the very heart” of Canada and that both nations can gain from joint work on energy security and critical minerals. ” Canada is already negotiating a trade pact with the Philippines and a wider group of Southeast Asian nations. Carney aims to finish those talks before his planned November visit to Manila, when Marcos will chair the ASEAN summit.
Carney has set a target of doubling Canada’s non-U.S. exports within a decade.
