The federal government is expected to announce Friday that it will prioritize five power-line projects to increase electricity trade between provinces and the Yukon. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson is expected to highlight the projects, which the government will support through financial and regulatory measures. Project details The Alberta-British Columbia intertie is expected to increase capacity by roughly 150 megawatts. The Alberta-Saskatchewan intertie will increase trade by 250 megawatts through replacement and upgrades to the McNeill converter station near Medicine Hat.
The Saskatchewan-Manitoba intertie expansion will increase transfer capability by up to two gigawatts along the Regina-Winnipeg corridor. New subsea cables will connect Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick and reinforce the transmission system linking those provinces and Nova Scotia.
An 800-kilometre high-voltage line will connect Yukon to British Columbia to support industrial and economic development, including the critical minerals sector.
Context The projects come as Ottawa has set a goal of doubling Canada's electric grid by 2050 to meet rising demand from industry, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and artificial intelligence. Provincial grids currently trade more electricity with the U.S. than with each other.
