Canadians Raise $461,822 Toward $50 Million Goal to Restore 24 Sussex Drive
More than 2,000 donors have given to the Rideau Hall Foundation campaign as of July 9. The total remains under one percent of the $50 million target.

More than 2,000 Canadians have contributed $461,822 to a crowdfunding campaign to restore 24 Sussex Drive as of July 9, Cbc reported. The Rideau Hall Foundation, which is leading the effort, said the average donation stands at $223 and that two individuals each gave the largest single amount recorded so far at $10,000.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the national fundraising drive in June and stated that donor names would be released publicly.
The foundation published the list on Friday. The $50 million target is described on the project website as a benchmark rather than an approved budget. Built in 1868, the residence has remained vacant for more than a decade since former prime minister Steven Harper last occupied it.
The building was later gutted to remove mould, asbestos and rodents. Harper and former prime minister Jean Chrétien both supported the restoration project. Carney said he will never live at 24 Sussex Drive.
He also announced a national design competition open to Canadian firms, with the winning proposal scheduled for announcement by next Canada Day.
