Melat Kiros won the Democratic primary for Colorado's 1st District on June 30, 2026. She defeated the incumbent representative who had held the seat for three decades. Kiros previously worked as a lawyer in New York.
In November 2023 she published an open letter criticizing U.S. law firms for labeling calls to eliminate the Israeli state as antisemitic. The letter described Israel's founding as rooted in colonialism and its policies toward Palestinians as apartheid.
It stated that violence does not occur in a vacuum while adding there was no justification for the October 7 attacks. Kiros also described the September 11 attacks as inevitable due to U.S. actions in the Middle East.
The district includes Denver and will hold its general election in November.
