Candidate who defeated Farage in 2010 seeks Clacton by-election win on Brexit reversal

John Stevens, a former Conservative MEP who left the party over European issues, is contesting the Clacton by-election on August 13 for the Rejoin EU Party. He previously defeated Nigel Farage in the 2010 Buckingham by-election when both men ran against then-Speaker John Bercow.

Stevens told GB News that his objective has shifted since 2010.

Buckingham, Stevens received 10,331 votes while Farage received 8,410. Bercow held the seat with 22,860 votes. Stevens said the Speaker's seat status meant the main parties did not field candidates, creating an opening Farage attempted to exploit.

campaign and polling Stevens is one of 34 candidates in the Clacton by-election. A YouGov poll cited by GB News found 55 percent of Britons would now vote to rejoin the EU while 34 percent would remain outside. Stevens argued that Farage's political position rests on the 2016 referendum outcome.

"Mr Farage's entire place in our politics rests upon his pre-eminent promotion of one policy: Brexit," Stevens said.
