Capito Wins West Virginia GOP Senate Primary

Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito easily defeated five challengers in West Virginia's GOP Senate primary on Tuesday, securing her party's nomination for a third term in the solidly Republican state. Capito received President Trump's endorsement, which she highlighted throughout her campaign.

West Virginia has shifted dramatically toward the GOP in recent years. Trump carried the state by more than 40 points in the 2024 presidential election.

Nonpartisan forecasters rate the general election contest as solidly Republican, with the GOP holding a 53-47 Senate majority.

Nebraska moved closer to the Senate matchup they preferred as Cindy Burbank won the party's primary. Burbank has said she will drop out and endorse independent Dan Osborn, who will then face incumbent GOP Sen. Pete Ricketts in November. Burbank’s victory gives Osborn a clearer path in the race, according to Politico.

Osborn, who ran as an independent, has positioned himself as a challenger to the Republican incumbent in the state. The Democratic primary for a key House district in Nebraska remained too close to call on Tuesday night. Results were still being tabulated with no clear winner projected.

Capito will face former Morgantown City Council member Rachel Fetty Anderson, who won the Democratic nomination by topping four rivals. Anderson's path to victory is considered steep in a state that has become overwhelmingly Republican. The senator has emphasized her work on jobs, affordability, border security and shared values during the campaign.
